The Dakota Indians lived originally in the great lakes region before they were driven out that region by Ojibway in the seventeenth century.
The Dakotas, better known as Sioux, then settled in the North great Plains and the praires. But more and more settlers stole away their land and the Sioux, after a bloody battle with little cow at their head in 1862, agreed to retire to a reservation.
That also was invaded, this time by people looking for gold. In 1874 the Sioux wars began; a major event there, of course, was the defeat of custer by Sitting Bull in 1876 at the battle of the Little Bighorn.
